If you have damp patches, bubbling paint, crumbling plaster, flaky plaster or powdery deposits on wall surfaces then dampness in wall is probably the culprit. Rising dampness usually occurs when moisture from the ground rises in masonry walls through the pores in the bricks and masonry because of the failure or absence of a damp-proof course, although poor sub-floor ventilation and bad site drainage can also be contributors.
